Week 3: Activity 3 Blog 3 Three Digital Stories from my Peers

Vanessa's Story

Vanessa's story was a story about her youth narrated by herself.  This gave it a personal touch or emotional appeal as she introduced us to her grandparents.  From time to time when necessary she added a hint of music, which fit well with the pictures of Appalachia.  Vanessa's dramatic question was in the form of a cross-cultural experience needed to graduate.  Where would that take her?  It ended up taking her on a journey to discover why her family could be considered unique and not so ordinary.  By the end she had tied the first part of her video (a boring family) with the rich cultural background of Kentucky to a newly discovered not-so-boring family that she started with.

Jared's Story - "America in a Word"

I really enjoyed Jared's story.  His was a personal story about the two generations of men before him in his family and a trek across America.  He narrated the story himself and like Vanessa, made the story very personal.  His emotional appeal came from his revere for these two men in his life and the fact that traveling across country came in the form of a death in the family.  I love the dynamic between his wild grandfather and not-so-wild father who loved travel themselves because of the changing landscape.  Jared's vivid words almost doesn't need photos.   He drew me into the story by stating in the beginning that his grandfather could sum up America in one word.

Amber's Story

Amber did not share her story publicly, so I will not link it.  Amber's story is personal as well.  Instead of being narrated by her voice, it is narrated by her word in text.  Dramatic background music sets the tone for a serious story.  She begins the story by noting that her grandmother struggled.  This is the emotional appeal that the story holds for the viewer.  The viewer wants to know why.  When her grandmother at the age of 46 finally had a chance to go back to school, the viewer then shifts their interest to the grandmother's success.  Inspiration is the theme of the story.
